Matthew Forbush, the vocalist for two-piece synthpop act Alexis, has been known to encourage audiences to do just that while writhing and crooning through hooks provided by classically trained keyboardist Dan Hurst. The duo found success quickly in their hometown of Grand Rapids, playing what seemed like every festival in 2011. They eventually branched out to do the same in Ann Arbor and Detroit in 2012 and 2013. But before Alexis, the pair's musical history had consisted of some slightly different projects. Hurst had been a frequent pit musician for a number of musicals and classical performances and Forbush had fronted moodier, acoustic and rock acts.

Their transition into the alluring dance duo all began when they traveled to Chicago to see Johnny Jewel’s Glass Candy at The Metro. Over the six-mile walk back to their hotel, they (perhaps drunk) fleshed out an idea for a two-piece act of their own. Hurst wrote riffs, Forbush wrote words and many laughs and disagreements were had. Passion procures results however, and eventually they completed their first album, The Night. The follow up ep, Goldstar, was arguably an even bigger success.

Alexis has toured the Midwest and performed on the same stage with bands like Future Islands, The B-52’s, Man Man, Chrome Sparks, Flosstradamus and Rubblebucket, just to name a few.

The duo’s newest effort, Love or Temptation, is a sleek sounding journey through the topics that make up the foundation of any great pop record. Love, sex, break-ups and starting over are among the key points here. Forbush’s often low register voice is best suited for this subject matter and the fit is obvious throughout the album. Recorded and mastered at River City Studios with Austin Ruhstorfer and Roy Wallace in Grand Rapids, the album marks a real upping of the ante in content and production styles. With a west coast tour in the works for early 2015, Forbush and Hurst will be keeping busy in Michigan with press, promotion and album release parties in addition to new videos, remixes and DJ events. It's hard to pick a favourite track. This is the only album i have so far deemed as "perfect", where every track, even the intro, is just a masterpiece in its own right. From the hard hitting Perturbator's Theme to the emotional title track, its 68 minutes of perfection. 10/10. connivingkhajiit
